How to Transform Your Body...and Transform 2018!

This year, I set the intention that I wanted to transform my body. I've always wanted to feel strong and lean in my body and yet each time I started my path on exercising and eating a balanced diet, something would get in the way. But this year was different, something has shifted in me, and I was determined to succeed.  

So, at the beginning of the year, I set out to create a consistent yoga practice, to dance and play in Zumba classes and to tone and strengthen my body by going to interval training classes. 

Those first couple of months this year were tough. In order to get myself to classes consistently, I had to look at my resistance, the inner stories of “you’re not good enough"' and feelings of wanting to give up. In the past, these thoughts would keep me from consistently making it to class, but this year I had a really strong intention so I knew I just needed to keep showing up. One day, I was on my yoga mat, and I had my breakthrough: I was so happy to be there! 

While the first half of the year was about exercise, now it was time to look at what I was putting in my body. In the past, I had done a really powerful Candida cleanse, which reset my digestive system and brought my body back into balance. So I decided to take that challenge on once more. Candida is an overgrowth of yeast in our digestive system, and we get it from too much alcohol, fried food, and, of course, sugar. Sugar is candida’s best friend. I found a cleanse online, and within 45 days, I lost about 12 pounds! Even when I started reintroducing foods back into my diet, I noticed that my digestive system was really working properly again, and I continued to lose a few more pounds. 

I lost 15 pounds total, and with my consistent yoga, dance and strength training practice, I felt like my body was taking shape—feeling muscles I didn’t know I had, and I started to see a six-pack appear. 

What I’m finding is that in the past, when I had made a commitment to myself  to transform my body, I had always failed myself. What I had thought was I’ll work out, do this diet for two months, and that’s it. That’s not it, though. It takes a while to transform your body, and it takes falling in love with the process to then consistently maintain it. It’s a process and a lifelong one at that. But I’m continuing to work at it so I enjoy going to the gym, and enjoy paying attention to what’s going into my body. It has been a challenging journey, but it’s now October, and I’m seeing real results. 

I share this with you because as we head into the holidays, instead of going back to an old pattern of I’ll get back into shape in January, get my trainer then, go on a diet then, etc, what if we open ourselves up to the possibility of not falling back into those old patterns? What if you get the trainer now and get fit now so that when January 1st comes, you’re ready to start the year off already in shape? What could you then focus on when you don’t have to focus on getting in shape? 

So what is that possibility that you would normally create for yourself in January but you want to create for yourself now? Maybe it's not about getting in shape but something else. Take some time after watching this video to sit down and brainstorm what that is, that new pattern you can start implementing now. So when you come to January 1st, you’re months ahead of your goals, you’ve accomplished them, and then what new outcome can you create?

Start now and put that plan together to achieve an important goal in the next three months, and then in January, you’ll have achieved that and you then have that space to create something new for 2018!

Clearing The Clutter

Summer is (officially) over. Well, it will be in two days. And what better time of year with the arrival of Fall, when leaves start falling off the trees, to get rid of ideas, patterns and items that no longer serve us or no longer bring us joy?

I’m sure you’ve heard of Marie Kondo’s book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up."  When you are tidying or unsure if you should keep an item of clothing or whatever that you haven’t used in a while, you hold it up, look at it and ask if it brings you joy. And if it doesn’t, you give it away because it’s no longer serving you where you are now.

Whew…how powerful is that? Does this item/idea/thing still bring me joy? How can we apply that to our lives with those things or even ideas in life that weigh us down and no longer bring us joy?

I like to clear my clutter every few months or so, and while I remember where I bought that cute little vintage purse years ago or that other cute purse I bought only a couple of years ago, I hold it up, take a breath and think, is this still important to me now at this stage of my life, and if it’s not, can I let it go? And that cute vintage purse, while I like the memory of it, it’s not my style anymore because I’ve changed and grown and am at a different point in my life, so I can happily donate it to someone who will enjoy it and who will absolutely look amazing with it. And when we do let go of things that no longer bring us joy or fit into our new lives, we open up space for new opportunities and beginnings. 

It’s amazing how our things, not to mention emotions—any grudges, hurt, or upset--have weight and energy and can keep us stuck in our pasts and patterns. When we let go of them, we are literally opening up space in our lives, both mentally and physically. And when we are open, so many new and wonderful possibilities open up to us. Energetically, we’re signaling that we are ready for a fresh start and are open to receiving the wonders of the universe.

So start small. You don’t have to become a neat freak (unless that’s your thing and I can definitely respect that), but take some time, maybe even 15 minutes, to tidy up that workspace you’ve been letting fall into chaos or doing a mini- clean of your closet, or even calling a friend that you’ve been meaning to call for ages, but friendship works two ways so she could call you, too, and just pick up the phone. Let go of the negative judgment weighing you down or the closet that can’t hold yet another new outfit and ask if this attitude or item is still bringing you joy. And if it’s not, let it go. Let go of old habits, patterns, things, ideas that aren’t working for you anymore and open yourself up to awesome.

You deserve more awesome in your life!

Don't Let Your Inner Voice Drag You Down

It’s something we do every day and consistently do, and it will last all of our lives. What is it? It’s how we talk to ourselves, and, of course, there are two ways we can do that.  Positive self-talk is very positive, encouraging, and when we feel good, we can take on anything and conquer anything we put our minds to! The other kind is negative self-talk, and that’s where we doubt ourselves and are in our victimhood, blaming others for the results of our lives.

Our self-talk is constantly with us every single moment of the day, and it is so powerful. And how we feel about ourselves and situations manifests externally, so it’s incredibly important to be aware of what self-talk and stories are running in our heads. So many times, I haven’t even noticed what negative thoughts or stories were playing in my head, but when you finally catch yourself, take a deep breath. Journal it out or stop and ask yourself what is another point of view that I can take to shift that inner dialogue into a more positive space?

I remember when I used to work in the corporate world, I was always in negative self-talk.  Things usually came easy for me, so there was no room for negative self-talk at those times, but when I was stretching myself, in uncomfortable situations or didn’t know the answer, the only story that played was that "I was stupid, I didn’t know what I was saying, I should just be quiet." Wow. “Be quiet” used to run my life when I was uncomfortable in a situation. I remember being in these marketing meetings, and I would be so quiet because I knew what I wanted to say, but I was so afraid that if I spoke up, I was going to be wrong and I would get some sort of backlash, so I. Just. Stayed. Quiet.

And that hurt. It was like this deadly silence in me because my soul, my creativity, everything that brings me alive, was saying to share it, but this voice kept saying it’s not safe to share, so just don’t say anything. So, I’d be feeling this deadly silence, and then I would go back to my office, and in my head, the story of “you’re not good enough, you’re failing at your job” would keep running. And that made me start to blame my colleagues, because no one intuited that I needed help or that I needed someone to explain this to me, so it was their fault I wasn’t doing my job well. The reality was, I was doing a great job, and no one else thought that was I doing a bad job; it was just me. I get that now but didn’t at the time. 

I put myself in my own jail. I jailed myself in this negative self-talk, and it even affected my outer life, because when I’d go out, I’d just complain about work. I was doing the best I could with what I could then, but now, I know I have the tools to stop myself from going down that negative path. Through years of inner work, I learned that I am in control of my thoughts, and any time I see myself going down a negative path, I can stop myself and course correct. I think to myself, Jeanne, no: this thought is not serving you right now. What is a thought that is going to serve you so you can get neutral again and then from that neutral place, take that other fork in the road and set yourself up to win? Ask questions, be vulnerable; if you don’t know what you’re doing, communicate that. Back in the day, I was so hard on myself to perform and produce that I could not be vulnerable and ask for help or guidance. Now, I take responsibility for myself, and asking for help isn’t scary anymore.

What’s coming up for you as you watch this? Are there any judgments on me or what I’m saying? I know that when I’m in judgment of someone else, it’s because I’m not comfortable within myself of what’s going on outside of me. Therefore, I move into a judgment of it to protect myself and make it wrong so I can be right. When I learned that was a pattern I had, that was huge. It meant I could never be in victim mode again and had to take responsibility for my thoughts. 

What is it that’s running your life? Do you live mostly in positive self-talk where you’re your own cheerleader? Can you recognize when you’re in a negative spiral so you can course correct and get yourself on a path that’s going to serve you? Or do you live mostly in negative self-talk where you’re judging yourself and others, and not believing in yourself? Do you feel like you’re doing the best you can do with the tools you’ve learned from your parents, friends and society, but not feeling happy or content? It’s okay if that’s where you are, and I get it because I’ve been there. 

So, what is one thing you can do right now to course correct a little bit so when you find yourself in a negative thought or judgment, stop and take a breath—our breath connects us to the present moment—and ask yourself is there another perspective I can view this situation from that can help me take action in a way that is going to bring me into a more positive space? Then, from that inner positive space, I can go and do and be whatever it is in the outside world. The stories we tell ourselves, how we relate to ourselves, is how we manifest in the outside world, so if we’re always in negative self-talk, we might be manifesting a lot of challenges in our lives. If we’re in positive self-talk and responsible for our thinking, there won’t be as many challenges because we’re clearing them up inside first, and we’re not even involving anybody else. If I have a problem with someone, I catch myself and ask myself what is inside of ME that’s keeping me from feeling positively towards this person? My instructors Ron and Mary at the University of Santa Monica would say, “Would you rather be right or be in the loving?” When you can stay more in positive self-talk—in the loving of yourself and others—life feels so much happier.

Be positive and love yourself!

Setting Intentions & Vision Boards

Yay, Jeanne’s Gems is back! I'm excited to be back with you! August ended up being a month chock full of goodness which meant I didn’t have time to share some gems with you.

And August was chock full because I was focused. Focused on developing new pieces for my Fall collection and creating new content to share with you.

It’s so easy to lose focus, but when we set intentions, they keep us on track, and that’s what I’m sharing in this video on Intentions and Vision Boards.

Setting intentions and creating vision boards are two of my favorite things to do, especially when I’m starting a new project or want a fresh start on something. What’s the difference between and intention and a goal? An intention combines a very specific (that’s important!!) goal and a thought that is an outcome that you want to achieve. When setting an intention, think of how you want to feel when, for example, the project you’re just starting is complete. Really feel that feeling you'll have when you’re in the winning, the completion of it. When you combine your specific goal with that feeling, the intention anchors you along your journey to insulate you from any pitfalls and obstacles you encounter along the way.

Intentions are particularly powerful with new beginnings, but you don’t necessarily need to be starting something new. When you get up, set an intention for the day. I did this every day in a week-long retreat, and it was amazing how focused and present I was. One day of that retreat, I set the intention of opening my heart and staying open all day. That meant that, when listening to someone, rather than starting to get into my own head about what I would say next or what advice I would give, I course corrected and just stayed present with them listening with an open and compassionate heart. I remember feeling so fulfilled at the end of that day because I spent the day connecting so deeply. 

So, what’s one intention you could set for yourself tomorrow morning? What do you want to cultivate this day? And then declare it.

When you go off course of your intention, this is where affirmations are a powerful tool, because they’ll get you back on course. 

And vision boards go hand in hand with intentions. At the beginning of every year, I love to create a vision board for the whole year, and these can have multiple intentions—intentions for your business, your relationships, your body, whatever you are called to set an intention for the whole year. And I make the creation of the vision board a mini celebration. I pull out inspirational images, quotes, sentences, words from magazines and newspapers in the weeks leading up to my craft time, and I write out the intentions themselves, but I also layer in all of these images onto a stretched canvas (you can get these easily at any craft store) with clear tape (no fancy glue or anything!), and I hang it up as my visual intention for the year.

So, is there anything new that you’re starting in your life or an area you want to have a fresh start in? Declare a new beginning with an intention, and see what possibilities open up for you. Set an intention, create a few affirmations to support it, and then create a vision board. This little toolkit can help you on your path. The tools are so important. When I don’t have my tools, I know I feel so unbalanced. I find it’s like going to the gym—I call it my spiritual gym!

Go be creative, set intentions, create your affirmations, design and play with your vision boards, and go out and follow your path.

Be powerful! You ARE powerful, beautiful and enough!

The Power of Affirmations

You may have noticed from this website, social media, and even more so, my jewelry (!) that I love affirmations! I put them everywhere—on my car dashboard, on my windows (not the windshield--don't worry!!!)—I use them as a reminder to always live in the highest vision I have for myself. As we all do, I struggle with negative thoughts, so I find that these affirmations allow me to help quell the negative self-talk and live my fullest life.

Your thoughts are not who you are, but pay attention to the negative thoughts that pop up and then write 4 to 5 affirmations that can counteract those negative thoughts. I write the affirmations on pieces of paper (get nice pens or Sharpie onto smooth rocks) and put them all around my house. Read them out loud to yourself so those affirmations sink in. 

I want to share with you five of my favorite affirmations. 

1. I awaken in the morning feeling happy and enthusiastic about my life.
Life is good!

2. I feel joy and contentment in this moment right now.
I use this when I feel anxiety or feel nervous about something. Life takes place right now.

3. I communicate my desires and needs clearly and confidently.

4. I feel successful with my life right now even as I work toward future successes.
This has helped ground me in setting goals for future growth.

5. I am energetic and enthusiastic. Confidence is my second nature.
This just gives me pure joy.

Jump Start Your Day for Success

OMG, there are just some mornings where you don’t want to get out of bed, much less face a whole day, am I right? But having some morning rituals in place not only get you up and moving but will set up your day for success. I’ll admit it; I don’t do these every day, but when I do (and I do most of the time!), I find that my days are more successful, and I feel like I’m winning during the day.

So, here are my five morning rituals to help you jump start your day for success.

1.  Make your bed.
It’s so simple, but I can get such resistance about making my bed. When I do this ritual, though, I start to feel organized inside. It brings a feeling of order, and my nervous system relaxes. It’s one less thing to worry about when it’s time to jump into producing mode.

2.  Meditate.
Meditation doesn’t have to look like in the movies or yoga magazines. Many times, my meditation practice involves me sitting on the couch with a fuzzy blanket and connecting with my breath. As long as you’re sitting still, breathing, connecting to your breath and slowing down your mind, that’s meditation. Or you could also do a moving meditation.  Don’t let the word meditation scare you. Sit with yourself for 5-10 minutes of quiet time, and that’s all it has to be.

3.  Exercise.
I go to a yoga studio most days, but when I don’t have time, I find it’s just important to spend even ten minutes of movement so I get into my body. If you have time for a class or a walk around your neighborhood; great! Whatever it is, just get your body moving.

4.  Drink hot (or lukewarm) water.
When we wake up in the morning, we’re actually dehydrated. I leave a glass of water by my bed before I go to sleep so I can just drink it right away in the morning and get that hydration back rather than starting the day from lack.

5.  Journaling.
I do something called morning pages—before you make your bed, before you get up, just write whatever is on your mind. It doesn’t matter what; it’s just getting out what’s in your head. A lot of the time, I find what comes out is really negative thinking, so it’s good to get that out and out of your head. You’ll let go of all of that negativity and start the day more focused and positive.

This will take you about 25-30 minutes. How wonderful to spend the first half an hour of your day with yourself!

Your rituals don’t need to look like mine, but find what’s important to you so you can take that first half hour of the day for you. There are so many wonderful, powerful ways to start your day and prepare you for success. What are yours?

How to Live in Abundance

An abundant life! What does that mean? 

We think “abundance”, and we see dollar signs. I think that’s our habit here in the U.S. But abundance can mean something really different. It doesn’t mean you have to have millions of dollars. I think abundance is having enough, plus some for somebody else. And if you have enough, and you have extra, then you live in abundance.

We all want to live a prosperous life where we can be happy and feel fulfilled. While it may seem difficult for some people, in reality, we already have what it takes to live an abundant life.

In my previous video, we talked about balance, and one of the things that can so quickly take us off balance is comparing ourselves to others or feeling like what we have or who we are isn't good enough. When we compare ourselves or wish we had more money, time, a bigger house, a newer car, whatever it may be, you’re viewing your life from a place of lack, and as a result, we just feel less happy. But, what happens when we reframe our mindset to one of abundance?

It's not always easy to feel abundant, but I cultivated 5 habits that have made me feel abundant in all areas of my life, because I believe abundance isn't just financial. Abundance is a feeling of wholeness or "bigness"--where you feel whole, alive and happy. Now who wouldn’t want to be living like that every day?

Here are my five habits to live abundantly.

Everything is on my side. When I set a budget for myself earlier this year, I thought I would feel less free by limiting my options. Rather than feeling limited, I looked at what I wanted to buy and chose what was really important to me in that moment. By choosing what was important rather then giving myself everything, my choice gave me the opportunity to embrace abundance. I looked at the options I can choose from, and I exclaimed, "I choose this one!" I didn’t feel lack after choosing A over B; I just chose A, and I let myself enjoy it fully and was grateful for it. Now, everything is enough; even when I choose A over B.

Being content. OMG, I used to have a tricky relationship with the word contentment. I used to think contentment equaled failure. Now, it means “This is it. This is enough. In this moment, everything that I have is enough.” It brings you into the moment rather than living in the future or the past. Of course, I still have my goals and 5 and 10 year plans, but being content with the moment right now with what I have? Anything that comes above and beyond is abundance, so now, I’m always abundant. 

Embracing change versus fear of change. I created affirmations for myself because, for me, change around finances is scary.  One of my go-to affirmations is “I trust that I am taken care of.” When I use this affirmation, it relaxes me, and when I feel relaxed, I feel free and abundant. Life is always a rollercoaster, but when we trust that we are taken care of, it allows us to relax and know that, while things might be on a low right now, they’re on their way back up. 

Proactive versus Reactive. When you’re reactive, you immediately go into fear mode, but when you’re proactive, you’re putting a new plan together. So, if your bank account is dwindling, what plan can you put into place to change that? Is it a budget? Is it looking at your business from a new angle? You’re shifting and planning rather than focusing on the negative and coming from fear. Now that's how to be proactive and create more abundance in your life. 

Come from a Mindset of what is working versus what is not working. Focus on what is working in your life, because if we focus on what isn’t working (at the moment), you move back into lack. So, what is working for you—your finances, your freedom? Using what IS working can help you plan and work on what isn’t working as well.

When I made these changes, I began to experience abundance every single day. I feel happier, more present and grounded, and I also feel financially secure. So, I ask, what is it within you that can get you to the next level of that abundance mindset? I want to hear from you!

How to Create Life Balance

You open your phone and you’re instantly bombarded by notifications.

There’s a new voicemail, missed calls, comments on your Facebook, activity on your Instagram, texts from friends asking you to go out, and at least a dozen unread emails.

And that’s just what’s happening on your phone.

It seems there will never be enough time in the day to keep up with your hectic lifestyle. Your to-do list is permanently expanding and never complete.

Your body is screaming for a break from all this stimulation. Well, at least that is how I felt at the beginning of this year. So, I gave myself permission to take some time off, simplify and incorporate more joy into my life. Here are five tips I came up with that helped me create balance in my life, and I want to share them with you.

1.  Turn it off.  

Easier said than done--and it can take a few days to get used to--but when you start your day by checking your phone, you're setting yourself up to be scattered and reactive rather than focused and productive.

2.  Trim the to-do list.

Rather than trying to get everything done everyday and then beating yourself up for not getting it all done, focus on the simple tasks that have to be done that day and don't worry about the rest. It will get done.

3.  Pay attention to your health.

Self-care is physical and psychological. Make time for yourself and your wellbeing, whatever this means to you. Whether it's starting a yoga practice or a meditation practice or checking out a dance class, take care of ALL of you.

4.  Spend time alone.

When we're always out or with friends, we're giving our energies out into the world. Take some time for yourself, alone, and turn some of that energy inward to yourself.

5.  Expand your awareness.

Start a new hobby or class. Learn a new language. Revisit an old passion and make time for things you enjoy.

These 5 tips helped me experience balance for myself. What does balance look like for you?  Take twenty minutes to reflect on this and find a time to implement it for 2 weeks or 2 months (or more!) and see how your life can change.

For the past 10 years I have worked as an advertising and creative director at Warner Bros Records and for a full-service advertising agency. I loved every minute of my advertising career but a few years ago I started on my journey to inner well-being and my spiritual path. I unlocked many doors that I had never opened in my life up until that moment. My desires in life shifted and that little girl who loved being the creative designer showed up and was ready to express herself within my heart as an adult.  I listened and took the scariest leap of my life. I left the title and security of being a creative director for other brands and devoted my creative expression to share what I stand for in my life…which is love, self-expression, inspiration, seeing the beauty and potential of others, and serving as a reflection for their own transformation

What was the catalyst to Your Wide Awakening? 

About 6 years ago, I started to ask the deeper questions in life, like what is my purpose, how am I showing up in the world and are there deeper layers to who I think I am? Once these questions started, they never stopped. In 2006 I was introduced to an amazing Master’s Degree program for Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica. In this program I was able to awaken a part of me that I had not yet discovered. A part that was more interested in uncovering my gifts, talents and loving heart while unlearning conditioned ways of viewing the world. I blossomed in this 2-year program and it was the greatest gift I have ever given myself.

I believe everything happens for a reason. Each path we choose, each path we don’t choose… they all take us to our learning lessons, our life’s curriculum. The moment I started to ask the deeper questions of life, my life changed. It took me many years of unlearning old ways of being and replaced them with updated more empowering thoughts and views that gave me a new purpose in life. By knowing who I am, trusting my truth and staying open to taking a risk, I understand that life is all about the journey and not about the outcome. If I did not take the time in my life to do the inner work, my creativity would not have had a safe place to be developed and my jewelry business would not have been born.

How did you go from thinking with your heart and not your head? 

My first thought to this question is that I have learned the art of taking personal response-ability for my thoughts, actions and words. I make a conscious choice everyday to live from my heart and to let go of negative energy right away. By understanding that everyone is this world is doing the best they know how to do, I can have compassion for how each person in my life shows up. When I do start to feel the energy of either fear, being accused, personally attacked etc….before I react, I take a deep breath, try to separate my emotional feelings and see the facts of what is going on. Once I am able to drop my emotional charge, I then approach the situation from a balanced and solution-based place in my heart. 

What tools, spiritual and/or practical do you use daily to continue living a miraculous, authentic life? 

A few tools that I use in my everyday life are heart-centered listening, not taking things personal, trusting my voice and that what I have to say and express is vaild and important and seeing the loving essence in all. When I use these tools daily, my day unfold with grace and openness. 

I have a beautiful morning spiritual practice where I wake up at 5:30am, I make myself a hot cup of ginger tea (sometimes I indulge with a cup of coffee) and I have a combo of practices. I start with a 15 min meditation which then leads into chanting the Maha Mantra on my harmonium, which then leads into writing in my journal and then I read a few pages from a spiritual book of choice. Sometimes I will also start my day with a few Sun Salutations and yoga poses when I am not going to the gym that day. 

By having this consistent morning practice, I start my day connecting to spirit, my highest self, my body, breath and soul. I then am filled up to go out into the world and share my heart with everyone I encounter.

How do you deal with stress?

I handle stress in my life by eating healthy food, doing yoga, meditating, stopping many times during the day to take a deep breath, keep my thoughts pure and positive, spending quality time with friends and family and always following my heart and intuition. When all these factors are in full expression in my life, stress just does not have room to fit in and if it does, it only lasts for a short sec. 

What is your favorite quote?

“Peace comes from within. Do not see it without.” – Buddha

I love this quote because it always reminds me to go within to resolve all challenges and find my inner guru. 

What role does your jewelry play in the spiritual lives of those who purchase and wear your pieces? 

The juiciness of life lives in the present moment and when we keep our thoughts positive we can create from a more grounded and powerful place in life. By wearing my empowering jewelry, you are reminded that you can attract anything your heart desires by holding a positive vision through repeating a daily affirmation. When faced with decisions, challenges or negative situations, touch or hold your necklace and feel the healing properties of the gemstones combined with your personal affirmation, knowing that you have the strength to move forward with grace and ease.

Example: I AM gracefully embodying Courage as I show up for myself each day with confidence, empowerment and self-love. Allow yourself the opportunity to feel into your quality and affirmation/mantra repeating it out loud or internally over and over until you can feel it in your heart.  When you are done, write your affirmation down and keep it in a place where you can see it every day and repeat it out loud a few times each day.
