3 Daily Practices to Relieve Stress & Anxiety

If you're here on this planet and up on current events, you’re likely to feel as though the world has completely flipped on its axis!  In fact, some days might just make your head spin!  I’ve found that the best way to relieve stress and anxiety, and to thrive in a turbulent environment, is to have a daily practice that allows you to remain balanced and better able to ride the waves.  Daily practices also provide your brain with a sense of structure, regularity, and predictability, and that makes all the difference in how your day unfolds.

Here are three wonderful ways to tap into peaceful vibes...come what may!

1. Boost Your Oxytocin - Known as the “love hormone”, oxytocin is a natural way to tame anxiety, relieve pain, and make you feel connected to others.  Try these activities to flood your brain with the yummy hormone that makes you feel all tingly inside:

  • Laugh
  • Cuddle
  • Meditate
  • Pet animals
  • Give little gifts
  • Listen to music
  • Go on an adventure

2. Try 4-7-8 Breath - This breathing technique, also known as “relaxing breath,” involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds.  This helps decrease fatigue, manage cravings, control anger responses, and promote good sleep.  Here’s the proper method:

  • Empty your lungs of air
  • Breathe in quietly through your nose for a count of 4 
  • Hold your breath for a count of 7
  • Exhale forcefully through your mouth, pursing your lips and making a “whoosh” sound for a count of 8
  • Repeat the cycle up to 4 times to feel the bliss
